Realizing the importance of the computer industry in the national development programme, the Government of India in 1984 announced a rationalized computer policy with the, main objectives of: (i) enabling manufacture of computers based on the latest' technology and progressively increasing indigenisation, consistent with economic viability,
(ii) simplifying existing procedures to enable users to obtain computers meeting their requirements, and (iii) promoting appropriate applications of computers, which catalyze the development process.
